Together with photographer Justo Casal, I traveled to many parts of Kenya during 2007.


On our last trip, my sons Elias and Benjamin, who were 15 and 10 years old at the time, came along with us.



 
The topic of female genital mutilation is very sensitive and we spent a lot of time just gaining the trust of people.


I was amazed at how they opened their homes and shared their lives with us.


In one Maasai village we lived in the traditional mud huts, slept around the fire with the families that live there.  Their generosity and openness far exceeded my expectations.
